miles long and its widest point is 7 miles.
With 450 miles of shoreline, Lake Livingston
is never crowded. It covers 93,000 acres
and has, of course, great fishing and
boating everywhere on the lake. The
coastline is speckled with many beautiful
homes and campgrounds attracting
thousands of vacationers annually.

Located just 60 miles north of Houston and
175 miles south of east Dallas, it makes a
great place for a weekend trip or year round
vacation home.
Moses L. Choate began a settlement named Springfield in 1835, and wanted it to be the seat of government.  He
offered to give the newly formed county one hundred acres of land if selected and if the name of the town could
be changed to Livingston, for his former home in Tennessee.  By election, in June 1846, the name was changed
and Livingston became the County Seat.  By August 8, 1846, the Board of County Site preceded to sell lots in the
town by public outcry.  The
lots sold from $6 - $17.50 per lot. The first commissioners of Polk County met in a
log house that September, took their oath of office and posted bonds.  The log structure was too small, and by
November 1846, James Andrews was commissioned to construct a new courthouse. It was to be 26 x 22 frame
building, not to exceed $397.00 in cost.  One of the District Judges who served here was Oran M. Roberts, who
later became Governor of Texas.
